The first fault was a broken on/off switch. The negative side was not making contact. Once fixed, the usual AFxxx transistor problem showed up which had killed this set. When the fault was cleared, the huge speaker blared out. I cannot find a diagram for this so not sure if it is aligned correctly.
The cabinet has been cleaned with washing up liquid and polished. Does anyone have a spare back plate which sits in the centre of the back?
