Safety

ELECTRICITY CAN KILL! Do not work on a live set unless you fully understand the risks.
  • Never attempt to service a mains powered radio whilst it is plugged in - even if it is switched off!.
You may need to make readings or check alignments but this should be done with extreme caution by someone who knows exactly what they are doing.
  • NEVER earth an AC/DC (Universal) radio. If you don't know what I mean find someone who can help you

  • Remember capacitors are supposed to store a charge. They can still give a nasty shock even after the radio is switched off and unplugged . Always ensure the large electrolytics are discharged before touching.
  • Never plug in a radio which you have just bought without having it checked by a qualified radio engineer. It is unlikely to work properly, may well explode due to failed parts or catch fire due to the dust, or it might just be an electrocution hazard.

  • Never leave a radio unattended after first power up. It could catch fire and burn your house down. If it has been running for an hour or so without incident, it is probably safe.
  • If you are unsure about what you are doing seek help from a qualified radio engineer. You only get one life!

  • Don't let all this put you off. There are ways to learn. The BVWS offers one day workshops to members on how to repair valve radios. Alternatively try battery powered transistor radios. They are safe, in my view just as much fun and will teach you a lot about radio.
